Greetings!

Janette Fennell from KidsAndCars.org here. We are very excited about being invited to become a part of the InjuryBoard blog.

Many thanks to Mike Ferrara for providing an account for KidsAndCars.org to help raise awareness about the dangers children face in and around motor vehicles.

As everyone is getting ready for the warm weather, we hunker down and hope that children will not be inadvertently left alone in vehicles. Last year 42 children lost their lives due to hyperthermia (heat stroke). We already have learned about 2 fatalities so far this year.

On March 8, 2009 an incredible article was written by the Pulitzer Prize winning author, Gene Weingarten about the topic of children being forgotten in motor vehicles. We worked with Mr. Weingarten for over 6 months as he thoroughly and thoughtfully researched this modern day phenomena. The article, aptly entitled, "Fatal Distraction" appeared as the cover story of the Washington Post Magazine and was blogged about by the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal and many more.

We highly encourage everyone to read this amazing piece. Many people have referred to this as the “must read” article of the year. Simply put; there is a message in there for everyone.

We share with you…………

Fatal Distraction
Forgetting a child in the back seat of a hot, parked car is a horrifying, inexcusable mistake. But is it a crime?

Welcome aboard Janette. There was a very sad case in central Iowa within the past two years where this happened to a school teacher. Oh my how sad it was. This busy mother just had too much on her mind and forgot the sleeping infant in the back seat. Welcome and I'll look forward to reading what you have to write.

Janette, thank you for joining and Mike, thank you for asking her.

I read the entire article "Fatal Distraction" and am blown away. Not only is it incredibly moving, but it enlightened me enough to do a 180 in my view about parents who leave their children in cars. It truly can happen to anyone!

Please see the visual reminders parents can use to remember the child is in the back ono the kidsandcars.org Web site and having your day care provider call if a child does not arrive is an excellent idea.

I invite InjuryBoard members to read the article and send it to people you know with small children. What an incredible report for the emotion and understanding it shares with the reader! Thank you for bringing it to my attention.

Best-
Jane Akre

Very happy to have you join us Janette. This is a critically important issue. As a parent, I can attest to how easy it is to become distracted, not to mention miss a small child standing behind your car in a driveway. Just last week in Tampa a two year old child was run over in a local driveway.

Thanks for sharing your expertise and passion with the IB community. We hope to return the favor for kidsandcars.org.

Welcome Janette,

It is a real honor to have you as a contributor to InjuryBoard.com. As the father of a two month old, it horrifies me to think that 42 children lost their lives this way last year. However, I can see how new parents experiencing sleepless nights with a newborn child, along with the ever-present challenges of work and home, could find themselves overwhelmed and absent minded. This remains an important safety issue that we cannot be reminded of too often.

Welcome Janette. I was struck by Toms comment on children behind cars. Just this morning I was picked up by a local car dealer to take me to my office as my car was getting repaired. When he put the vehicle in reverse an alarm sounded AND a back up camara was activated showing the area behind the car on the navagation screen. The techonolgy is there. Lets make ALL manufacturers use it.

Welcome! Let me echo George on the back-up cameras...insurance companies ought to offer hefty discounts for vehicles with those installed since they protect the leveraged property and also save lives.
