This Saturday, September 20, 2008, the Department of Transportation has arranged for inspectors to be on hand at over 400 locations nationwide, to make sure that children’s car seats are properly installed. These safety seat inspections are being offered free of charge, for one day only.

According to the U.S. Transportation Secretary, Mary E. Peters, 7 out of 10 car seats are not installed correctly. “As any EMT, policeman or fire official will tell you,” she said, “a properly installed child safety seat could mean the difference between life and death. I know America’s parents are busy, but a few minutes of your time tomorrow could save you a lifetime of regret.”

The free car seat inspection is kicking off a new education campaign from the Department of Transportation to improve child safety. The campaign includes tips to help parents understand and use new latch technologies that make it easier to install safety seats in their cars.

When properly used, safety seats reduce the number of fatalities in vehicle accidents by 71 percent for infants and by 54 percent for toddlers.
