Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) agreed to settle the claims of about 800.000 Ford Explorer owners who contended their vehicles were worth less on resale because of perceived roll-over propensities of the Explorer. A lengthy trial took place in Sacramento, CA. Those who purchased model years 1991 through 2001 will be eligible for $500 vouchers to buy new Explorers or $300 vouchers to buy other Ford or Lincoln Mercury products.
Ford will also be required to limit the safety claims in its advertising, and the company will pay as much as $25 million in costs and attorneys' fees. Sacramento County Superior Court Judge David De Alba said the settlement is in the best interest of all the parties. The plaintiffs alleged Ford falsely advertised the vehicles as safe when the company knew they had a tendency to flip.
