Earlier this week, Peter Pan and Great Value Peanut Butter recalled all peanut butter with the product code 2111 due to a widespread outbreak of salmonella. According to the FDA over 288 cases of peanut butter salmonella have been reported in more than 39 states. If you fear you have consumed the contaminated peanut butter and are showing signs of illness, contact your health care provider immediately for treatment. UPDATE: The source of the salmonella contaminated peanut butter may have been uncovered.

According to an article by the Associated Press in the Washington Post, on Friday, March 2, 2007:

Federal inspectors found the strain of salmonella that tainted peanut butter made at the ConAgra Foods plant in Sylvester, Ga., the Food and Drug Administration said yesterday.

Government and industry officials have said the contamination may have been caused by dirty jars or equipment.

Meanwhile, the FDA continues to warn people against the use of products possibly containing the contaminated peanut butter such as Sonic Ready-To-Use peanut butter found in the chain's desert topping, and Carvel's Peanut Butter Topping found in several of the chain's sundaes and icecreams.
