With over 2 million cosmetics surgeries a year, including breast reductions and enhancements, as well as "tummy tucks", it is about time the public was made aware of the risks of these procedures. That's a 446% increase since 1997. TV shows glorify these procedures as simple and everyone thinks they can have them done with no problem. In truth, every surgical procedure carries with it significant risks, even of dying. The sad case of Kanye West's mom, Donda, brings this to life. One doctor refused to do the surgery until she was cleared by a internal medicine specialist. Someone else chose to do the tummy tuck and breat reduction, and she died, needlessly, at age 58. Of course, when she sues, there will be many clamoring for caps on the amount she can recover. President Bush has made that one of his rallying points in each State of the Union Addresses. However, there are medical malpractice cases that are not frivolous and the victims deserve to be fairly compensated for the harms caused. Doctors must be held personally responsible when they do harm and do not deserve to be rewarded by tort reform and restrictions on their patient's right to sue. It just doesn't add up to justice.
