Corporate America and in particular, the Wall Street Journal, are happy today with the developments concerning the implosion of the once famous law firm, Milberg Weiss & Bershad. However, the public at large also benefits when wrongdoers are punished for their acts. Faced with federal indictments, members of the firm are striking their own guilty pleas to save their skins and will implicate others in the process. When attorneys commit crimes they do a disservice to all of us and should be punished accordingly. Just as important, when doctors commit repeated malpractice, they too should suffer some discipline. High praise should be given to the Arizona Medical Board on who suspended the license of an Anthem doctor after he was determined to be an "imminent threat to public safety."

The Board said it took the action after receiving word that a third liposuction patient had died under the care of Dr. Peter James Normann.

Both the American Bar Associaton and the American Medical Association should be doing more to product the public from bad lawyers and bad doctors.

The U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles has announced that David Bershad, a high-ranking partner at class-action firm Milberg Weiss & Bershad, has agreed to plead guilty to a conspiracy count and cooperate with federal prosecutors investigating his firm for allegedly paying kickbacks to clients.

Bershad has agreed to plead guilty to a conspiracy charge, to forfeit $7.75 million, to pay a $250,000 fine and to cooperate in the government's ongoing investigation and prosecution of other participants in the alleged conspiracy, the government said.
