The Center for Disease Control and Prevention reports that there are 4.7 million dog bites a year, 800,000 of which require medical attention. That is 2191 bites a day. Every day. Of these, half involve kids. Of the children bitten, two thirds between the ages 5 and 9 are bitten in the head and neck. There are 386,000 bites that require trips to the ER and a dozen die each year.

It's time to stop this carnage. When someone tells you their dog doesn't bite, don't listen to them. All dogs bite. Be warned: If you are a dog owner and your dog injures someone, you will be sued. Make certain your homeowners insurance covers dog bites and make sure your policity limits are sufficiently high to cover these claims. All dog owners must take personal responsibility for the conduct of their dogs to make certain they don't contribute to these 4.7 million bites per year.

I suggest respectfully that the author of this article read the book: Dogs Bite; but Balloons and Slippers Are More Dangerous.

A good book that points out how silly the "dog bite epidemic" mindset is. Severe bites are rare considering how many dogs and humans live together in close contact.

Until dog owners are held responsible for the actions of the animals they own, and parents step up the supervision of their young children - well, sadly, bites and even the very rare fatality will occur.

Diane. Thanks for your comments. I'm not sure 800,000 bites a year that require medical treatment is a small number. I agree with you that dog owners must be personally responsible. And they better check their homeowners policy, for they will be sued. Take care, Mike

Those numbers are now 4 plus years old.
800,000 is just the reported numbers....and the 40 million dogs in 68 million homes is just licensed dogs...
People really need to learn more about why and when dogs bite.

Gardner. Thanks for your comment. Is there a way to balance the enjoyment dogs provide with the need to protect kids from bites. Do you think dog owners should be personally responsible for the harm their dogs cause?
