Simply Potatoes Recalled for Dangerous Bacterial Contamination

In the wake of the widespread salmonella contamination in Peanut Corporation of America peanut butter that killed at least eight and sickened more than 500, Stop & Shop Supermarket and Giant Food are removing several potato products from their shelves due to possible bacterial contamination.

The products, which have been voluntarily recalled by Michael Foods Inc. subsidiary Northern Star Co., include 20 oz. bags of Simply Potatoes Shredded Hash Browns, Simply Potatoes Homestyle Slices and Simply Potatoes Red Potato Wedges. All have package “use by” dates of March 29 to April 3, 2009.

Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria suspected to be lurking in Simply Potatoes, typically causes flu-like symptoms including high fever, severe headache, stiffness and nausea. Approximately 20% of clinical infections are deadly. They can also be extremely damaging to pregnant women--causing miscarriage or stillbirth--as well as to people with weakened immune systems.

Neither Giant Food nor Stop & Shop has received any reports thus far of anyone experiencing illness or injury after eating the potato products. Customers who have purchased these products are advised to throw away any unused portions and bring the receipts to their stores for a full refund.

If you have been sickened by any of these products, contact attorney Mike Ferrara at The Ferrara Law Firm to find out more about your right to compensation.
