Fiery Crash on New Jersey Turnpike Killed Five when Tractor Trailer Struck Stopped Car

Last Saturday, an accident on the Mt. Laurel section of the New Jersey Turnpike involving 10 cars and a tractor trailer killed five people and injured three others.

Investigators took a blood sample from the driver of the tractor trailer, who had ploughed from behind into a 2004 Buick LeSabre stopped in traffic. Standard procedure in fatal crashes is to test for the presence of drugs, alcohol, or impairing substances.

The Buick, initially in the right lane, was launched into the center lane, where it hit other cars and burst into flames.

All five passengers in the Buick were killed in the crash: Jeanette Urbano, 72 and Salvatore Urbano, 74 of Passaic, NJ; and Anna Kane, 76, Rose Kane, 75, and Francis Kane, 78, all of Kearny, NJ. Three passengers traveling in a 1999 Jeep Cherokee were also injured—one critically.

The tractor trailer driver was not immediately charged with anything; investigators have 30 days to file charges.

Along with the American Association for Justice, we need to support reforms on truck safety immediately. Implementing better driver fatigue standards can help prevent more fatal highway accidents like this one.

Maryland Tractor Trailer Crash Results in $1.2M Jury Verdict

A Baltimore jury returned a verdict in favor of a man who was injured in a tractor trailer accident. The injuries consisted of a fractured vertebra, a fractured elbow and an ankle injury. The vertebra had to be surgically removed. The injured man was a forman at a cable company and now only can return to work in a light duty capacity. What makes this verdict fascinating is that the plaintiff demanded $500,000 and AIG Insurance Company offered $475,000. With the parties only $25,000 apart, neither side would budge and this verdict was the result.

Tractor Trailer Seriously Injuries Motorcyclist - Federal Jury Awards 6M in Texas

A federal court jury in Waco, TX awarded $6 million dollars to Walter Browning for injuries he sustained when his motorcycle was struck by a tractor trailer. Both sides disagreed over how the collision happened, but the jury disregarded the statement of the truck driver who contended Browning drove directly into her truck. Browning, a 13-year Army veteran and former security guard, lost four fingers on his left hand and can no longer walk without assistance because of massive injuries to his left leg, his attorneys said. Jurors awarded him damages for past and future physical injuries, disfigurement, physical impairment and medical expenses.
